A Heartbreaking Tale of Loss and the Devastating Impact of Smoking
It was a dark day in 2006 when my mother rushed to me, tears streaming down her face. Even before she spoke, I knew something terrible had happened. My uncle, who was only 50 years old, had passed away due to lung sickness caused by his long-term heavy smoking. He was the sole breadwinner for his family, and his wife and three young children were left to grieve his loss.
My aunt was completely shattered by the tragedy, and she too soon passed away from another sickness. Their three children were suddenly orphaned, with the eldest being only 10 years old and the youngest only 5. Finger-pointing and arguments ensued among my older relatives, and nobody was willing to take responsibility for adopting the children. In the end, they were left with no choice but to end up in an orphanage.
As we tried to come to terms with this tragedy, another uncle passed away three years later from lung cancer due to smoking. We were all in shock and filled with grief once again. Watching him struggle to breathe and cough non-stop, even with oxygen from the hospital, was unbearable. He died in so much pain and suffering, just like his brother before him.

In 2019, I read a shocking article in the Daily Mail about a doctor who found black lungs filled with tar from a 30-year smoker. I realized that my uncles' lungs were likely filled with this toxic substance as well, causing them to struggle to breathe and leading to life-threatening illnesses.
